More power coming to Northbrook Street
Newbury Business Improve-ment District requested a contribution towards the £20,452 cost of installing more power supplies, following the extension of the charter market in Northbrook Street last year.
The £9,000 was sitting unused as part of the council’s refuse contract risk fund which was no longer needed.
Speaking at a meeting of the council’s policy and resources committee on Monday night, chief executive Graham Hunt said that at present, a number of stall holders were required to use portable energy generators while others had no electricity at all.
The council’s market working group chairwoman Martha Vickers (Lib Dem, Northcroft) added: “Some of the market traders who moved into Northbrook Street last year will benefit from the electricity.”
Mr Hunt said that market stallholders would have priority over the use of the power supply if other events were scheduled to take place in the town, and that the town council would not be responsible for maintenance costs.
