More room for users in new building for Mencap work project
Run by West Berkshire Mencap, the Link-Up project has moved from The Slater Centre, on Greenham Business Park, to a larger unit on Hambridge Road and is able to offer its service to more adults.
The extension forms part of the celebrations for Link-Up’s twentieth anniversary.
New recruits will be assessed to ensure they are given work suited to their needs.
Each member of the work-force will also receive training into health and safety issues, equal opportunities, getting to know others and personal safety, helping to ensure that the recruits are kept busy, motivated and happy at work.
Newbury Town Council and Hungerford-based kitchen and home firm Eddingtons are among the companies involved in the scheme.
West Berkshire Mencap Link-Up manager, Jane Hall, said: “We have a work-force of adults with learning disabilities whose ages vary from 18-70 and upwards.
“They enjoy learning, working, a sense of achievement, and the social aspect of engaging with others in their peer group.
“Now we have a larger space to work in, we are taking on more work from a range of companies and would like to increase our work-force so that we can continue to grow.”
Places at Link-Up are paid for by personal budgets, either personally or via a social worker, and each member is paid a training allowance. Any remaining funds are put back into the Link-Up project.
