More than 900 runners take part in Bayer 10k

Hundreds line the streets to cheer them on

MORE than 900 runners took part in the Bayer 10k race through Newbury yesterday (Sun).

Cheered on by the hundreds of people who lined the streets, men, women and children battled their way through the tough race to cross the line and receive their medals.

For the second year in a row, Dave Morgan was first man to cross the line - in a lightning quick 33 minuteds and 36 seconds.

That's not the only reason Mr Morgan has to celebrate - he's getting married at Thatcham's St Mary's Church next weekend.

Speaking to the NewburyToday minutes after the race, he said: "It was a fantastic atmosphere again and I'm delighted to have won."

The 32-year-old then joked: "I better go home and have a shower and get changed, I've got wedding rehearsals this afternoon and I'm not sure they will let me in looking like this."

Mr Morgan also ran this year's London Marathon - in just 2hrs 25mins.

Philippa Bowden, who finished second in last year's Bayer 10k, went one better this time around by becoming the first woman to cross the line in 37 minutes and 54 seconds.

After the race, the 21-year-old told NewburyToday: "After coming second last year it was great to win this time.

"I've not had the chance to train properly over the last couple of weeks because I've had a few niggles."

Samuel Wright, of Newbury Athletics Club, took the under 16s 1500m race in 5mins and 10secs and Lucy Wells, of Team Kennet, took the girls race in 5mins 36 secs.
