Morrisons welcomes customers today (Monday)
A ribbon was cut by the chairman of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust (KACT), Rob Dean, to mark the opening of the M convenience store in Northbrook Street.
Around 20 people rushed through the doors at 9am on Monday but more shoppers were quickly appearing at the threshold, with milk and cigarettes the first items to be sold.
The store has created 18 new jobs for the town and fills the slot of the former HMV shop, which closed in March after the chain entered administration in January.
The area manager for Morrisons, Andy Shaw, said: “It’s a great opportunity for us to bring another convenience store to the area. Newbury is a great shopping area and we’ve converted an empty shop in the town centre,” he said.
“We want to be working with and supporting the local community and that’s why we asked [the KACT] to open the store as they’re an important charity in Newbury.”
The store will be open from 7am to 11pm every day.
