Mortimer mum speaks of Olympic Torch joy
Miss Shaw, aged 34, of Mortimer, will carry the Olympic flame through an area of the district ahead of the London 2012 Games on July 11 as the Olympic Torch Relay moves from Reading towards Salisbury.
Her epic feats of marathon endurance have been matched only by her desire to raise as much money as possible for charity, and after having recovered from another 100-mile ultramarathon, the TP100, at the weekend, she said she could not believe it when she was told.
“When I found out I had been nominated it was really exciting, but I thought the odds would be unrealistic for it to go any further as there are some amazing people out there working in the community who I consider to be deserving of such an honour way more than me.
“When the email finally arrived it was very exciting for me but it did leave a void where other people I knew had been nominated had not received the email and therefore wouldn’t be joining me.”
Miss Shaw became a Guinness world record holder in April after completing the London Marathon dressed as her alter ego Alfie, the Guide Dogs for the Blind mascot, in four hours 44 minutes.
“I would like to think 2012 will be a huge year for raising money and awareness for my charities The Guide Dogs for the Blind and Veterans Charity but I would also like to think that what I have achieved will inspire others to realize their true potential.”
