Mother appeals for community help to build memorial for babies
Leanne Baker, aged 31 of Mayfield Drive, wants to fundraise to set up the teddy bear shaped memorial and pergola with benches at the London Road Cemetery.
She gave birth to two stillborn children, Emily in 2000 and Amy in 2005.
Both her daughters are buried in a cemetery in Cambridgeshire, where Miss Baker used to live.
The memorial would be for any child of any religion who has died.
She said: "Nobody had heard of anything like this in Newbury.
"My family make sure that [my children's] graves are kept nice but when it comes to their birthdays or Christmas or you are just having one of those days, you have no where to go.
"For me it would be nice to have somewhere to sit and not have a million people pass by."
Since talking to local people about the idea, Miss Baker said that she had come across generations of women who could use a facility including a woman who lost three babies 30-years-ago.
She said: "It's just been astounding how many people who have lost children who wanted something."
After seeking and gaining support from Thatcham Town Council, Miss Baker has applied for a £500 grant from the town council.
She said: "They really liked the idea so we decided we would do it."
She is expecting that the project could cost about £2,000 to £3,000 and is hoping that herself along with the support of the community they can raise the money.
She added: "If it comes from the community it will mean so much more.
"It will be more from the heart if we did it that way."
There are still tickets available for the next fundraising event - a fitness showcase on August 10 at Thatcham Town Football Club.
