Motorcycle safety to the fore at special session

Newbury firefighters host motorcycle group

SAFETY for motorcyclists was to the fore at a special session hosted by Newbury firefighters last Tuesday evening.

The Green Watch crew from Newbury Fire Station, in Hawthorn Road, hosted a talk for members of the motorcycle group, AJS and Matchless Owners Club, on road safety and how best to provide emergency assistance to a motorcyclist involved in an accident – including helmet removal methods.

A practical demonstration was given, following a talk from the crew, which also highlighted the crucial need for the correct initial emergency procedures to be carried out, during the ‘golden hour’ – the critical time span between an accident occurring and the patient’s arrival at hospital.

Crew manager Robin Jordan said: “As the club were motorcycle enthusiasts a demonstration was given on when it would be necessary to remove a motorcyclist’s helmet.”

There was also a practical demonstration on the brigade’s team approach to creating space around a casualty involved in a road accident.

The club’s members also had a chance to have a look inside a fire engine and raise questions about the various aspects of safer motorcycle riding.
