Motorist recorded going 85.7mph just before blind bend in 30mph zone in Newtown

A motorist was recorded going a whopping 85.7mph just before entering a blind bend in a 30mph zone in Newtown.

Newtown Parish Council had a speed indication device (SID) installed on Well Street just before its southern bend leading towards Jonathan Hill, between September 2022 and February 2023.

During the 22 week period, the speeds of 67,779 vehicles were recorded and the parish council called the results “very concerning”.

Nearly 75 per cent of vehicles passing the SID exceeded the 30mph speed limit. This compares with the national average of about 51 per cent when passing through a 30mph zone.

In total, 15 per cent of all vehicles recorded were going above 39mph, which is triple the national average of five per cent.

The highest recorded speeds averaged a “shocking” 66mph a week.

Newtown Parish Council vice chairman Tom Reseigh said: “The C45 [Well Street] is a narrow road – even narrower at the bend leading up to Jonathan Hill – with no pavements, no street lighting and many concealed entrances to houses, fields and the church.

“It is used daily by pedestrians, dog walkers and even horse riders. Vehicles travelling at the speeds recorded are a serious and real danger to everybody, including the speeding drivers.”

The parish council has asked motorists to be more aware of why speed limits are there, show more care for themselves and greater consideration for Newtown residents and other road users.
