Motorists left scratching their heads in Bishops Green as council erects contradicting signage
Road markings and signage was replaced as part of the resurfacing work recently carried out to the bridge, however a council blunder has caused potentially dangerous driving conditions for those travelling towards the A339.
One sign states that oncoming vehicles have priority when crossing the narrow bridge, while another states that incoming vehicles have priority.
Road markings show that motorists are expected to stop and give way, however these have been partly obscured by puddles following periods of heavy rain in recent weeks.
Chairman of Greenham Parish Council Tony Forward, who lives in Bishops Green, said: “The road markings are completely obscured by the puddles.
“Pedestrian safety is completely compromised.”
A spokeswoman for West Berkshire Council, Peta Stoddart-Crompton, said the work was conducted by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
She said: “It is part of a scheme recently introduced by Basingstoke & Deane.
“This road was closed for a number of months during the latter half of 2013 while improvements were made to the bridge, resurfacing works were undertaken and this priority scheme introduced.”
However, a spokeswoman for Basingstoke and Deane council, Sophia Waite-King, said Hampshire County Council was responsible for road signs.
An enquiry has been lodged as to how long it will take to rectify the problem.
