Motorists urged to be wary of "crash for cash" scams

Follows reports of near collision on the A4 at Theale

POLICE are warning motorists to be wary on local roads after reports of 'crash for cash' incidents.

It follows a 'near road traffic collision' on the A4 at Theale on Sunday night, involving a black BMW with a 64 registration plate and another vehicle, possibly a silver or bronze Vauxhall Cavalier.

The vehicles were said to be traveling at speeds in excess of 80mph before breaking sharply, narrowly avoiding collision.

The man who reported the incident posted on social media soonafter: "Heads up people. A4 theale by pass. Black BMW 64 plate and a old style Vectra passed me at 80 / 90mph then pulled in front and hit the brakes.

"I managed to get out of the way, called the police and is the second report of the night.

"Just a heads up crash for cash is hitting the A4."

The post prompted responses from several others, including one user who wrote: "That's where it happened to me...A4 Theale by pass on the big roundabout.

"Guy slammed on his brakes so I went up the back of him, and then he claimed compensation. Two years later and the case still isn't settled. Watch out people."

Another added: "That happened to me in Theale...claimed £15,000 off my insurance company for a tap to their bumper and three whiplash claims. Makes me so angry."

Social media reports suggest the same vehicles were later seen parked in a lay-by by the Porsche garage in Padworth.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police, James Williams, confirmed that the force had been made aware of one incident that night, and urged anyone with information to call the 24-hour 101 number.
