Police were called at 11.49am to reports of a two vehicle collision involving a white Vauxhall saloon and a black Ford Focus.
The incident happened westbound between junctions 12 (Theale) and junction 13 (Chieveley).
The driver of the Vauxhall, a man in his sixties, suffered head injuries and was taken to JR2 Hospital in Oxford as a precaution by Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance.
Both carriageways were closed to allow the helicopter to land but have now been re-opened.
The closure caused four-and-a-half miles worth of queues.
