Newbury MP shows support for Watermill after 100% Arts Council funding cut

Newbury MP Laura Farris visited The Watermill yesterday (Thursday) to express her support for theatre following the shock announcement that Arts Council England have withdrawn its annual funding.

She said: “I am extremely disappointed that Arts Council England has refused funding to this local jewel of a theatre, despite its exceptional creative offering, and value to our local community.

"I’ve been working closely with Michelle Donelan [Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport] and am hoping in the coming days we can ask them to urgently reconsider their priorities and recognise that rural theatres of this quality are exceptionally rare and just as deserving as theatres in the North of England.”

The Bagnor theatre has launched a new fundraising campaign – THRIVE. Individuals wanting to take action can donate from as little £1 to show their support and ensure that the work of The Watermill, and everyone who is part of its community, can continue to thrive. There is also the option of becoming a Friend of The Watermill, for as little as £30 per year.

The 200-seat 'regional powerhouse' has a reputation for producing bold, world-class theatre with local and national reach. It also has an extensive programme of community outreach and schools touring work, and a firm commitment to diversity, education, and talent development.
