West Berkshire’s MPs react to budget

West Berkshire’s MPs have been giving their reaction to the budget.

Reading West and Mid Berkshire’s Labour MP Olivia Bailey is pleased about cheaper pints of beer – along with the 40 per cent relief on business rates for the retail, hospitality and leisure industry

“People in Reading West and Mid Berkshire voted for change to stabilise our economy and fix our broken public services,” she said.

“And today we’ve started to deliver.

“We will have thousands more appointments in our local NHS, the teachers and buildings our schools need and significant new investment in SEND.

“Despite the terrible Tory inheritance this Government will honour its promise that working people will not face higher taxes in their payslip.”

Lee Dillon, the Liberal Democrat MP for Newbury, has welcomed new NHS funding while criticising the Government for neglecting crucial areas like social care, SEND, and affordable housing.

He also said there was a lack of concrete action to address the root challenges facing Newbury families, from housing affordability to the special education system.

“While I’m glad the Chancellor has finally responded to our calls for NHS funding, the people of Newbury deserve results, not more empty promises,” he said.

“It’s frustrating not to see a definitive plan for the redevelopment of the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

“Our community in Newbury has waited too long already for meaningful improvements.

“The Government cannot keep dragging its heels on such a vital issue – local patients deserve better, and people here are tired of empty promises.

“I’ll be watching closely to make sure the Government actually delivers the extra GP, dental, and urgent care services Newbury has been lacking for far too long.

“This is a start, but without a robust plan for social care reform, our health services will remain on the brink.

“The Government needs to move quickly and bring all parties to the table to find a real, long-term solution.

“This has been kicked down the road for too long.”
