Mr Wright's a real PAL

Newbury man completes paratriathlon for local charity

A NEWBURY man has raised £770.50 for a West Berkshire charity after completing a paratriathlon.

Robert Wright, aged 27, who has Down’s syndrome, swam 400 metres, cycled 10km and ran 2.5km at the first paratriathlon to be held in the UK at Eton Dorney Lake to raise money for Partners for Active Leisure Scheme (PALS), a charity for young people with physical disabilities or sensory impairments.

Mr Wright completed the paratriathlon in a good time and was supported during each section by Sean Cryans, who designed his training programme, Ben Taylor, who rode the tandem with him (both support staff from the Home Farm Trust), and his brother Laurence who ran the track alongside him.

Mr Wright, who has been a member of PALS for 17 years, said: “I wanted to get fit and make money for PALS. I am nearly too old now for PALS, it has been great fun. I like swimming and cycling on my tandem.”

PALS, which was established in West Berkshire in 1997 and is based in Englefield, aims to give young people with disabilities the confidence and self-esteem to achieve their potential in every aspect of their lives through leisure and recreational activities.

It currently supports 50 members and has more than 20 volunteers.

PALS manager, Helen Randall, said: “This is an amazing achievement for Robert, and we are extremely grateful for the funds Robert has raised for PALS.”
