'Mrs Brown' and her 'boys' raise club funds on sponsored walk

Hundreds raised for New Horizons

AS Mrs Brown would say, “That’s nice.”

Inspired by characters from the hit TV comedy, Mrs Brown’s Boys, supporters, friends and members of the New Horizon Club for adults with learning difficulties staged a sponsored walk recently.

Graham Hunter (as Mrs Brown) pushed ‘Granddad’ (Mary Whiting) in a wheelchair as she suffers from osteoporosis and, with the rest of the crew, they set off from Hungerford along the canal, bound for Victoria Park in Newbury.

The New Horizons Club meets every fortnight on a Thursday between 7pm and 9pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, Shaw-cum-Donnington.

Club spokeswoman Mary Hunter said: “We’re not funded by the central government or local authority and we are not a registered charity, so we survive on fund-raising activities and donations from friends of the club.

“As the club is getting low on money, so that we can keep it going we did this sponsored walk.”

Mrs Hunter added: “So far we have raised £2000 – and still have money to collect.”
