NADARS rally puts radio on the radar

More than 1,000 radio and computer enthusiasts attended the annual event at Newbury Showground, Chieveley, to exchange ideas, purchase spare parts and visit demonstrations.
The NADARS demonstration tent showcased the society’s K3 transmitter/receiver and the newly- built, portable Hexbeam two element beam antenna.
Stations were contacted around Europe, in single side band voice mode, morse code and data modes.
There was also a display of automatic dependant surveillance broadcast virtual radar, showing live commercial aircraft flights within a 150-mile radius of Newbury.
The rally included displays by British Amateur Television, The Radio Officers’ Association, Reading Hackspace and a restored police command truck.
Others were provided by the RAF and Royal Navy amateur radio societies, UK Six Metre Group and the Worked All Britain Group, which aims to create more activity on the air by amateurs.
Local members of Vulcan to the Sky, provided a static display.
NADARS chairman Jeremy Willis said: “We are now one of the oldest and largest radio rallies in the south of England and the society prides itself in its activities in Newbury, having helped tutor more than 450 candidates through their amateur radio exams over the last 12 years.”
