National Pothole Day highlights ever-growing problem of the danger to motorists of potholes on UK roads and costs to local councils

January 15 is National Pothole Day which was established to bring attention to the ever-increasing pothole menace on our roads.

Anyone who drives will be familiar with that sudden ‘clunk’ from roads that are plagued with potholes.

Potholes can cause costly damage to your vehicle and even endanger lives.

In 2021 a survey by the Asphalt Industry Alliance said that the number of potholes filled in by councils in England and Wales has increased during the past year to almost 1.7 million.

This was up 200,000 from 1.5 million in 2019-20 - the equivalent to one being fixed every 19 seconds.

It said that the total amount spent by local authorities on filling in potholes in 2020-1 was £93.6m.
