New centre for two local charities

Greenham Common Trust has acquired a 40,000 sq ft building, off Hambridge Road in Newbury, for the two charities, which is double the size of their current home at The Slater Centre at Greenham Business Park.
The organisations required a new home following a steady expansion in training and employment schemes for disadvantaged people, many with physical and learning disabilities.
Newbury Community Resource Centre chief executive, Kelvin Hughes, said: “This is fantastic news for us. Having twice as much space will enable us to continue with our core services such as the Community Furniture Project, where we recycle and sell furniture and white goods and more recent projects such as the bike recycling scheme.
"Greenham Common Trust has always been a key supporter of the Resource Centre and having larger and more convenient premises in the town centre will give us the potential to expand our existing services and develop new projects to give disadvantaged people even more opportunities to learn new skills and develop employment opportunities.”
West Berkshire Mencap chief executive, Leila Ferguson, added: “As a non-profit making organisation Link Up relies on the generosity of organisations such as Greenham Common Trust to enable it to continue delivering valuable workshop skills, training and employment for adults with learning disabilities. This is a wonderful opportunity to innovate and grow our existing services.”
The charities will move into their new home in about three months time.
The Trust is in discussions with a potential occupier to fill the vacant space left in the Slater Centre.
The Slater Centre was built in 2006 and is named after the late Patrick Slater MBE, former chairman of West Berkshire Mencap and member of the trust's distribution committee, in recognition of his long and outstanding service to the voluntary sector.
Mr Slater was heavily involved in the development of the centre which was built with a £1.5 million grant from the Greenham Common Trust.
