New civic awards for Hungerford - by public vote

HUNGERFORD town council has announced the launch of a Freedom of the Town Awards scheme. The project is designed to become part of the celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year.

The award is intended to promote good citizenship by recognising as role models those “who, by their actions and demeanour have demonstrated exceptionally loyal

service to the benefit of the town.”

Town mayor Martin Crane said: “Each year we shall consider awarding this Freedom to those who, in the opinion of our citizens, have made a significant contribution to the well-being of Hungerford.

“Our town is blessed with many who, through their selfless actions, have given so much to our community and by identifying a few with this award, we also giving our thanks to the many who volunteer to the huge benefit of the whole town.”

He added: “As well as having the accolade of of being selected, winners will receive a certificate and a medal which can be worn at civic celebrations and, subject to the approval of the Royal British Legion, could be worn at November’s memorial service. Also, their names will be featured on a board in the Corn Exchange.

Members of the public can nominate candidates, which should be received by town clerk Claire Barnes by March 2.

Mr Crane said the scheme had fired residents’ imagination and added: “The Womens Institute has already asked for around 20 forms.”

It is not yet decided whether the awards can be made posthumously, but this is being considered by the awards committee in the light of the recent demise of veteran town Robin Tubb.

The selection committee, which has yet to be formally announced, will change every 12 months although there is no guarantee that awards will be made automatically each year.

Everything will depend on the quality of the niminees, said Mr Crane.

He added: “Nomination forms are available from the council office, although nominations can also be made via email, Twitter of Facebook. It’s necessary to state why you are making the nomination.”

The panel of six will make their decision, which will be presented to the full council for ratification.

The Awards will be announced at the town’s public meeting on Thursday, March 15.
