New family business for Brightwalton-based farm
More than 1,000 people turned out as the shop opened for business and the owners organised a hog roast, a bar serving local beers, wines and ciders, vintage tractors to entertain the children and a range of local producers offering samples.
The shop replaces a derelict pig unit on the land, selling the farms own produce including beef, game and wild venison as well as a range of homemade options.
It also sells food and drink supplied by other local producers.
Clare Whidborne, who has grown up on the farm, will run the new store and accompanying tea room, which features a large child-friendly garden.
She described how a “party atmosphere” was present on the launch day, complimented by glorious weather.
“It made for a really nice day out for families and people visiting friends,” said Miss Whidborne. “Families were quite happy to spend time there just relaxing in the sunshine.”
She added it was a great opportunity for visitors to taste the produce and see how local it all is.
“It gave people an insight into what we are going to be focusing on,” she said.
“It was just really, really positive. We were amazed how supported we were by the local people as much as people from further afield.
“We were really overwhelmed.”
The shop is situated on the B4494, open Tuesday to Saturday between 8:30am to 6:30pm.
