New MYP for West Berkshire

Sixteen-year-old Cameron Smyth has been elected as the district's new Member of Youth Parliament

THE views of young people in West Berkshire will now be represented by a new Member of Youth Parliament (MYP).

Sixteen-year-old Theale Green Community School pupil, Cameron Smyth, has been elected to the UK Youth Parliament, which aims to engage young people to use their voice, energy and commitment to influence local and national government and providers of services for young people.

Cameron was elected by cabinet members at a recent event in Wokingham, taking over from last year's MYP Adam Osmond, while The Downs School pupil Jeff Vinall was appointed the new Deputy MYP for West Berkshire.

Cameron said: “I am very pleased to have this opportunity to be able to express young people's views. In my time as MYP I hope that their views will be more respected in the community and by government and that relationships between young people and others will be stronger.”

This year's cabinet for West Berkshire has selected a number of campaigns to focus on, including cheaper travel and transport on buses for young people and development of a website and forum to promote events for young people within the district.

The cabinet meets fortnightly at the Thatcham Town Council Offices.
