New name for Thatcham development
The former Waring House site Bluecoats, which is being developed into apartments, will be called Alice Bye Court
A NEW development in Thatcham for over 55s is to be officially named at a ceremony on Friday (September 30).
The former Waring House site Bluecoats, which is being developed into 51 apartments for rent and shared ownership, is to be named Alice Bye Court due to the significant role Alice Bye played in the history of the town.
The name was put forward by the Thatcham Historical Society and the society chairman, Dr Nick Young, said: “Alice Bye created one of the earliest charities in Thatcham around 1413, giving a Burbage tenement to the churchwardens.
“We though the name Alice Bye Court would not only highlight an important person from our past but also the charitable nature of so many of its inhabitants, past and present.”
The new facility, which has been commissioned by West Berkshire Council in partnership with Housing 21 who will manage the scheme, is due for completion in Spring 2012.
