New signs for canal towpath in Newbury

New signs requesting cyclists give way for pedestrians on Newbury canal towpath

CYCLISTS using the canal-side towpath near the New Monkey Bridge in Newbury have been urged to slow down and give way for pedestrians.

According to West Berkshire Council, although the towpath is popular both as a pleasant commuter route and for recreation, the narrowness of the path in places demands extra courtesy from walkers and people using bicycles.

To help promote this, four new signs have been erected to ask cyclists to slow down and give way. The wording on the signs was provided by Sustrans – the national sustainable transport movement - and the signs also badge the path as being part of National Cycle Route 4, which runs through the town.

The signs were installed by the local Sustrans ranger and West Berkshire Council.
