New Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) installed on Hungerford streets
SPEED Indicator Devices (SIDs) have been placed around Hungerford in in bid to calm traffic.
Hungerford Town Council's highways and transport committee heard how three devices have been installed.
A SID is a temporary, vehicle activated illuminated sign used by local communities to display vehicle speeds.
SIDs are designed to help to raise driver awareness of local speed limits and have been proven to reduce traffic speeds at appropriate locations.
Town councillor Richard Hudson told the meeting: "Two of them are ours and one belongs to the Town & Manor."
The town council SIDs are currently sited at Charnham Street and the A338 Salisbury Road, while the Town & Manor has placed its on the common near the Kintbury gate.
Mr Hudson added: "I'll be interested to see how long the charges last; it will be important to have someone swapping the batteries."
The devices can also be moved to alternate sites in town where speeding is a particular issue.
Town mayor Helen Simpson asked whether it would be better to have the device on the common moved further along the road, rather than near the cattle grid, as motorists tend to pick up speed farther along.
But Mr Hudson replied: "Hopefully it might stop them speeding in the first place when they see it.
"People do seem to be slowing down for them, in fact, so that's quite encouraging.
"They will be moved around every three weeks but so far it's going great."
District councillor Dennis Benneyworth (Con, Hungerford and Kintbury) said: "I've seen drivers' brake lights coming on as they approach them, so they are working."
