New stroke rehabilitation centre opens in Newbury

Held at the Phoenix Centre on Newtown Road, it was officially opened on Wednesday, with the Mayor of Newbury, Arthur Johnson, visiting to meet with members.
Sessions will be held every Wednesday from 10:30am to 3pm, and will provide a range of physical exercises and cognitive activities to aid the recovery of stoke victims.
The new facility was established by Stroke Care for Newbury and West Berkshire, which also has facilities in Woolhampton, Shaw and Hungerford, and was introduced to cope with demand.
The organisation currently supports 58 members, but trustee for the organisation, Chris Bartlam, said he hoped the new facility would encourage more stroke survivors to come forward for rehabilitation, while also providing an opportunity for more one-on-one interaction between the members and the volunteers who run the centres.
He said: “We almost had too many people [at the existing centres].
“Because of that, the one-on-one relationship was not happening, so by having an additional unit we have been able to trim down the Woolhampton centre to a much more manageable and focused unit.
“We always welcome contact and if we can help in anyway we will do so.”
He added that, ideally, members should join as soon as they can after being discharged from hospital.
