New YMCA says: have your say
Options for the future include providing a new facility such as recording studio, youth café or gym.
Meanwhile, members have elected a new management board.
The project YMCA has won the support of local MP Richard Benyon and the former Archbishop of Canterbury, the Lord Carey of Clifton, who has become the Newbury YMCA president.
A special match was held to launch the Newbury YMCA’s community football project, which will provide free football coaching sessions for children in the area.
The sessions are designed to train and utilise young football coaches of 14 years and upwards. These coaches will then work with children and young people aged between five and 16 years old. The plan is to run a summer football camp, and anyone interested should email James on McMahon jammac14@ gmail.com
The association is currently conducting a survey of young people to find out what they think Newbury has to offer them and what facilities they would like to see.
The survey is also being conducted in schools and publicised to young people through youth workers and in areas where young people congregate, such as Victoria Park.
The results of the survey will feed into the planning of Newbury YMCA and may lead to the creation of a brand new youth facility in the town.
Mr Benyon said: “I’m giving my full backing to the Newbury YMCA board. Newbury YMCA fulfils the finest traditions of this remarkable national organisation.
“It provides vital support for young people facing a complicated and troubled world.
“The work of the YMCA has never been more needed and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that Newbury YMCA thrives so that it can support more young people in the years ahead.”
