New youth section for rugby club

Hungerford Rugby Football Club runs taster sessions for Colts

HUNGERFORD Rugby Football Club has launched a new youth section, the Colts.

Club spokesman Jeremy Smeddle said: “Launching a colts section is an important step for the club as it creates an aspirational target for the mini and junior section, as well as feeding the senior sides with the next generation of local talent.”

The club is running taster sessions to give players an idea of what playing Colts rugby is like.

The first was on May 21 and another is scheduled for June 25 from 10am and until 12.15pm.

The session will be followed by a barbecue for players and supporters.

Mr Smeddle said: “We hope that the Colts will mirror the club's values, and will be fun as well as aim for success on the pitch. The club is looking for 16 to 18-year-old players with any level of experience. These maybe boys who played at school and want to continue playing.

“They could be players who are looking for a club that they will feel comfortable playing for as adult. Some of the initial signings, are players from bigger clubs who are bored with sitting on the bench, and want to join a club where they will be a central part of the team.”

He added: “It's an important time for young adults of this age, and Hungerford Rugby Football Club hopes to provide a sporting alternative, which will lead to a rewarding pastime for years to come.

“Colts is a transition from junior to senior rugby, and Hungerford RFC are keen to make sure as many young stars make it through to the senior ranks as possible. Hungerford RFC have always had the reputation of being a social club.

“However over the last couple of seasons they have demonstrated that nice guys can also be successful. Hungerford RFC have been promoted twice in the last four seasons, as well as numerous other successes on and off the pitch.”
