Newbury bombing memorial to be unveiled today (Sun)
A short service is being held at 4pm, the same time the town was bombed 70 years earlier, before the mayor of Newbury, Arthur Johnson, unveils a marble plaque which carries the names of the victims engraved onto it.
The ceremony is taking place in St John’s memorial gardens, close to St John’s Church on Newtown Road marking the spot where the first bomb landed.
Local historian David Clow, who helped arrange the memorial with Newbury Town Council, said the new memorial will provide a place of remembrance for the town.
“This was a major event relating to the history of Newbury, it’s vivid in a lot of people’s memories,” he said. “It will be quite an emotional experience because they [local residents] had some very narrow escapes.”
Anyone is welcome to attend the event.
