Newbury bouled over by tournament

Newbury Rotary charities the winners

WHILE Britain chose to leave Europe last week, the Rotary club of Newbury showed its French connection with its annual ‘Boules in the Square’ tournament on Sunday.

The event acts as a charity fundraiser where family, friends and colleagues can build team spirit in a competitive environment.

More than £2,000 was raised over the course of the event and will be used to support Newbury Rotary’s nominated charities of End Polio Now, West Berkshire Young Carers, Parkinson’s UK and others.

This year saw 16 teams representing both community groups and local businesses, including West Berkshire Mencap.

A-Plan Insurance team defeated Newbury Round Table B team in the cup final by 11 to four, taking home the 2016 trophy and a case of West Berkshire Brewery ale.

Everyone was able to get involved in the ‘Closest to the Jack’ competition. Kathy Jones from magazine won the adult prize of a meal for two at Strada Newbury, while Carlos Wood, on a day visit with his family from Oxford, claimed the junior winners ‘goodie bag’ donated by Bills restaurant.

Youngster Reece won the raffle prize for two to tour the West Berkshire Brewery at Yattendon. The prize was given to his father as Reece has yet to turn 18.

Next year’s tournament will take place on Sunday, June 25.
