Newbury businessmen take the canoe to work ...in London
Joe Ferrar, aged 31, and Garry Larcombe, aged 32, (pictured), left Newbury at 6:30pm on Friday to travel to their Vodafone office in Paddington to raise money for 3rd Newbury Scout Group.
The pair completed 20km on Friday, 58km on Saturday, 47km on Sunday and 11km on Monday morning with a total paddling time of 25 hours, plus a one-mile walk through Slough. Apart from taking five minute breaks to stretch, they only stopped for an hour each day for lunch, and slept in tents over night.
Speaking of the event, Mr Ferrar said: “It was significantly harder than we expected it to be.
“We didn’t realise until we got there that it was the Henley Regatta. We kind of paddled into the middle of that and got stopped by a police boat.”
Both men are lovers of the outdoors and Mr Ferrar said: “The reason for the scouts in particular was to help a local organisation."
.“We wanted to do something for the local community to actually deliver something specific. That’s our motivation.”
And it is not just financial support that they are contributing to the Scouts group.
“The Scouts are hoping to rebuild their Scout hut, to expand the group and offer better facilities to a broader range of young people”, said Mr Larcombe.
“It’ll cost a lot of money and we plan to do what we can to help with their grant application”
