Newbury car dealership opens £45k specialist new Land Rover workshop

A Newbury car specialist is pursuing a new investment strategy to capitalise on the niche luxury car market after growing consumer demand.

Walt Motor Company, on Newtown Road, has invested up to £45,000 in upgrading its existing workshop facilities to accommodate a specialist service for Jaguar and Land Rover owners.

Heading the project is company owner Pieter Van Der Walt and general manager Andy Bayliss, from Thatcham.

Entrusted with overseeing the new operation is Land Rover master tech Marcin Kurkus, who has 15 years experience with various garages and dealerships.

"I believe in a personal touch," he said. "I once charged a customer £1,000 for a simple fix for what another garage was going to charge him £17,000 for.

"He came in and thanked me with a gift hamper the next day.

He added: "I have worked and will work on any cars, anywhere from 1949 to 2022."

The company claims to be among the only garages capable of meeting these specific service requirements in the Newbury area – adding that most garages will avoid servicing Land Rovers.

Among the classic cars displayed within the indoor showroom are the 1985 Mercedes imported from South Africa. But the company's main pride and joy is its two prestige CSK (Charles Spencer King) Range Rovers imported from Tanzania – of which only 200 were ever made in 1990.

Mr Bayliss, who has more than 30 years industry experience, explained that the company was taking a risk under the current economic climate, but that "failure is not an option".

He announced further plans for expansion and recruitment across the coming year.
