More news, no ads

A care home in Newbury is helping to create a dementia-friendly community with a series of free events.

To mark Dementia Awareness Week, Care UK’s Winchcombe Place, on Maple Crescent, is hosting three virtual events aimed at those living with dementia and their carers.

On Tuesday, May 18, from 3pm-4pm, local people are invited to attend a Dementia Friends session led by the home’s customer relations manager, Vicki Lambourne.

The event is part of nationwide programme launched by the Alzheimer’s Society which aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about dementia.

On Wednesday, May 19, from 2pm-3pm, the Winchcombe Place team will welcome senior specialist nurse practitioner, Jennifer Hall, for its online Advanced Dementia Talk.

This will cover a range of topics, including brain and body changes, communication, sensitivity and the environment, as well as behaviour and end of life care.

Finally, the team will end the week with a dementia-friendly online exercise session with mindset massage on Friday, May 21, from 2.30pm-3.30pm which is open to the community as well as their loved ones and carers.

The event will involve gentle and fun movements, while listening to musical favourites from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, with a brief talk on the importance of keeping active.

Miss Lambourne said: “As we approach Dementia Awareness Week, we’re keen to share our expertise here at Winchcombe Place and support the community however we can.

“We know just how challenging it can be to look after a friend or relative living with dementia, so we’ve organised a week packed with advice events and activities designed for older people and their loved ones.

“We’re hoping to provide professional knowledge and insight to those who need it, as well as providing a hub for shared experiences.

“We want people to know they’re not alone, and we’re here to offer support, so we’re looking forward to welcoming local people virtually for an inspiring week of information and guidance.”

For anyone unsure about how to take part in the virtual events, help is at hand.

The team at Winchcombe Place will host the event using Zoom, an online meeting space.
