Newbury College grass fire suspected arson
Thames Valley Police spokesman, James Williams, said police were investigating a suspected arson at about 3.38pm yesterday (Thurs) in the grounds of the college, in Monks Lane.
Grassland to the rear of the college was set on fire
Phil Knight, the watch manager of White Watch at Newbury Fire Station, said one pump was called at 3.30pm to the Monks Lane site, where a small area of grass in the college grounds was alight.
Firefighters extinguished the fire with a hosereel before leaving the scene at 4pm.
“It was the fourth such incident at different spots in the same area in the last few days,” said Mr Knight.
Newbury firefighters were also called to the college at 7.30pm on Wednesday evening (Aug 28) when one crew tackled a 200 sq m blaze in the college grounds which was: “Well alight,” said Bob Mitchell, watch manager of the station’s Red Watch.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze using a hosereel, before damping it down and left the scene at 8.15pm.
An area of grass approximately 100ft by 20ft was destroyed as a combined result of the fires.
