Newbury College hosts night of celebration as students graduate

Among the guests were the deputy mayor of Thatcham, Gary Johnson, and representative from the Institute of Engineering Designers Dave Castle, as well as a number of local employers and family and friends of the students.
The chairman and chief executive of Reading firm Westbury Street Holdings Limited, Alistair Storey, was guest speaker.
A number of students also received recognition for exceptional commitment and achievement, including Matthew Booth, who was awarded the AWE award for outstanding higher mechanical learner and the iED annual student project award, which was presented on behalf of the institute by Mr Castle.
Jordan Saunders received the AWE most improved higher electronics learner award, while Lorraine McClellan took home Newbury College’s outstanding further education learner award.
The outstanding adult learner award went to Valerie Perry and the outstanding higher education learner award was presented to Russell Garside.
Following the ceremony, graduates, award winners and guests were invited to a drinks and canapé reception, made and served by the college’s catering students in the catering training restaurant, which opened in October.
Newbury College principal Anne Murdoch said: “The Newbury College graduation and FE awards ceremony is a celebration of the achievements of our hardworking students and staff.
“The event is also an opportunity for family and friends to recognise the achievements of individuals and for the college and employers to present special awards to recognise the outstanding achievements of some of this year’s students.
“We are particularly grateful to Alistair Storey for presenting the certificates and awards to graduates and to the sponsors of the FE awards for their commitment to supporting our courses and their generous donations.”
The sponsors for the awards include Apple Print and Creative, M & B Hair, Hitachi Capital, Jewson and AWE.
