Newbury couple celebrate 60 years of wedded bliss
Now, six decades and seven children later, a Newbury couple are celebrating their diamond wedding.
William and Nellie House, who are now 80 and 83, met for the first time at the Bandalog Café, in Northbrook Street, where Nellie worked at the time with William’s mother – who introduced the two one day.
They married at Ashford Hill Church on November 7, 1953, when Bill was 20 and Nellie 23.
The couple, who have now received a card from the Queen marking their anniversary, lived in Ashford Hill before moving to Kingsclere, where they now
live.
All their children still live locally, as do their 32 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Relatives from all over the world gathered to help the happy couple celebrate at Sandford Springs recently.
Mrs House said: “We have taken everything as it comes and have had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs along the way.
“We met all those years ago and have lived happily ever after in our little bungalow.
“It was amazing to see all the family there at the celebration, it brought a tear to my eye.”
Mr House said: “We never really argue and have a great time together, we have had a good life and a happy marriage.”
