Newbury dog up for award for protecting owner
Scampi, a Jack Russell, is in line for a Hero Pet Award for his act of bravery in protecting Rosie Foster during an incident in February.
Fourteen-month-old Scampi had only been with Ms Foster for three days when they went for a walk near Hutton Close, Speen.
They were walking along a footpath from Hutton Close into the parkland which runs parallel to the A339 between Hutton Close and Church Road, when she believed she was being followed by a man.
She continued along the path in the direction of Shaw House and noticed the same man following her.
It was then that the alleged incident took place.
Seeing what was happening, Scampi jumped into action – he bit through three-quarters of his lead and then bit the man who then ran off.
The police took a DNA swab from Scampi’s mouth.
Ms Foster said: “Scampi went ballistic; I was amazed. In my eyes, he is a hero. He is such a little hero; I would not be without him."
Scampi is now in the final four of the Dogs Trust award.
The winning dogs will be recognised at the honours event at Home House, London, on July 23.
On urging people to vote for Scampi, Ms Foster said: “He was so brave. For him to do that when he had only known me for three days is amazing.
“Whether he wins or not he will still be my hero.”
You can vote for Scampi up until today (Fri) at
