Newbury doorman puts away 72 ounces of steak

Hoggit and Hoof steak challenge a success, but three challengers are defeated by meat

LARGE men eating meat have never been an uncommon sight at the Hoggit and Hoof in Market Street, Newbury, but on Wednesday, the envelope was pushed a fair bit.

Four meaty Newbury doormen were invited to inaugurate a new challenge set by the owners: eat 72 ounces of steak and get it free (or pay £49.95 if you don't manage it).

Four and a half pounds of steak, with no bone to weigh it down, is quite a plate filler, and only one of the four entrants, Anthony Hazel, who works at Fever nightclub in Market Place, managed to put it away.

Pictured above is Mark 'Paddy' Padwick, of Hambridge Road, Newbury, attempting the challenge on Wednesday evening.

The monster steaks will now become a regular feature at the restaurant, but anyone who wants to take up the challenge needs to book in advance.
