Newbury electricians fined for duping client

Jamie Warren, aged 25, formerly of Avon Way, and 31-year-old Aaron Howe, of Mountbatten Close – trading as Bright Sparks Electrical – carried out uncertified work, costing one customer hundreds of pounds to put things right, Reading magistrates heard on Monday, September 8.
The case was brought following an investigation by West Berkshire Council trading standards officers.
The court was told that a customer complained that the pair charged him £400 to fit a circuit breaker at his home before giving him two National Association for Professional Inspectors and Testers (NAPIT) forms, which falsely implied they were registered with the organisation.
When a registered electrician broke the news, the customer contacted the defendants, but they failed to provide the necessary paperwork, the court heard, and the customer had to pay for it.
Mr Howe and Mr Warren both admitted one offence of unfair trading and one of failing to provide information to trading standards officials when required.
Mr Warren was fined £750 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £910. He was also ordered to pay £150 compensation to the consumer and a statutory surcharge of £75.
Mr Howe was fined £600 and was ordered to pay £910 costs. He was also ordered to pay £150 compensation to the consumer and statutory surcharge of £60.
