Newbury firefighters' charity car wash best ever

£2,100 raised for 2 good causes including firefighter's disabled son

A CHARITY car wash at Newbury Fire Station recently proved the best yet, raising more than £2,100 for two good causes.

The money raised will be split between The Fire Fighters Charity and funding towards a second-hand, replacement mobility van for the disabled son of a Newbury firefighter.

In 2007, Brian Midwinter’s son, Tom, aged 26, was left wheelchair-bound and in need of full-time care after falling from a roof and suffering a brain injury.

Despite this, he enjoys a busy lifestyle, which would not be possible without a wheelchair-adapted vehicle.

Mr Midwinter, a firefighter with Newbury’s white watch for the last decade, worked up a lather alongside colleagues at the car wash at the Hawthorn Road station on a recent Saturday.

Afterwards he said he was overwhelmed.

“It’s the biggest total I can remember the car wash raising. Everyone’s been really supportive,” he said.

“That’s fantastic and helped so much.”

He said that the family was trying to raise £9,000 to buy a replacement, second-hand mobility vehicle for Tom.

Mr Midwinter added: “It [the vehicle] will still be 10 years old, but it will be low mileage, good quality and already adapted.”

Tom’s current mobility van is 15 years old and the MOT bill, paid by his father, recently amounted to £1,000.

“He can’t get about without it, he has two carers 24 hours,” said Mr Midwinter.

Continued efforts by the family to reach the £9,000 target included recently taking part in the Devil Mud Run in Winchcombe, near Cheltenham.

Online donations can be made up to October 26, visit JustGiving.com and search for Brian Midwinter.
