According to Mike Wilson, crew manager of Red Watch at Newbury Fire Station, one fire engine was called at 6.10pm to a house in Glebe Lane, where a build up of soot and tar had caused a chimney fire above an open fireplace.
“The chimney had a complicated flu structure, we used ladders to get onto the roof and put water down the chimney,” said Mr Wilson.
The incident was closed after an hour, with a reminder from the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service to get chimneys swept every year. Chimneys above wood burning fires should be swept twice a year.
