Newbury golfer wins car for hole-in-one

ONE keen Newbury golfer who hit a hole in one has picked up the prize for his achievement - the keys to a £16,000 car.
Neil Devery, who lives in Essex Street and is a member at the Newbury and Crookham Golf Club, played the 198 yard shot while taking part in an amateur centenary competition organised by Blackmoor Golf Club in July.
Mr Devery, who is now the proud owner of a new Citroen DS3 DStyle Plus, said: “I came through the door and told my wife that I got a hole in one and her head dropped because it is tradition for the person who got it to buy a round of drinks.
“I said to her I did have to pay for drinks but I won a prize. I wish I had a camera when I showed her the picture of the car, her face was a picture.
“I think it’s safe to say that I am allowed to play a lot more golf now.”
Remarkably, it was the third time Mr Devery, who plays off a handicap of 11, has managed the feat of getting a hole in one - although he insists this time is by far the best.
“I have managed it before but I have never won anything for it. In fact I’ve never won anything remotely like this in my life,” he said.
“The green was elevated so it was hard to see but someone jumped up and down and shouted “it’s in!” I couldn’t believe my eyes when I went up to the hole and saw my ball sat there, it’s amazing.”
