NEWBURY Rugby Club has expressed their delight with how the international match held at the club went on Saturday evening.

England's under 20 rugby team continued their unbeaten run when the met Scotland at the club on Friday.

The chairman of the organising committee at Newbury Rugby Club, Steve Barnett, said: “The people of Newbury really turned out, as they sometimes do. The Scots seemed to enjoy themselves and the night was a big success.

“We are looking forward to hosting more events like this one in the future.”

Newbury Weekly News understands that at least 3,000 spectators attended the match.

Former Park House schoolboy Jonathan Joseph enjoyed home support as his side romped to an easy victory over the struggling Scots.

The London Irish centre who just recovered from a broken hand started on the replacements' bench but he came on as replacement in the second half.

The televised game was a one-sided affair, with England always looking comfortable.

The first try was scored in the first ten minutes and England never really looked like faltering.

The half-time score was 35-8 but after the break the hosts changed gear and slowed the pace, but still managed 56-8 at the final whistle.

Brian Doneghan, father of Scotland's Mike Doneghan, gave his view of the game: "Scotland did alright, considering the pressure they were under.

"England's forwards dominated but Scotland gave them a good scrap."

Newbury rugby fan, Tony Blinco, said: "England played a good, quick off-loading game and from a spectator's point of view, it was well worth it."

England U20's next game, where they will be hoping to wrap up their grand slam is against Ireland in Dubarry Park, Athlone, next Friday, after which they will be travelling to the Junior World Cup in Italy.

Tickets were sold at £12 for adults, £8 concessions and were free for under 10s.
