Newbury kids learn how to make sushi at Sushizen with Mr Mo

One of Newbury’s most exciting new restaurants became a classroom on Bank Holiday Monday when 30 children were taught how to make their own sushi rolls.

Japanese restaurant Sushizen, located at 16 Bartholomew Street, welcomed several youngsters and their families to take part in Mr Mo’s summer sushi class.

There were two sessions of the sushi class which were run by Sushizen’s chef Mo Hansubhayyan, an experienced sushi connoisseur who honed his skills making and serving Japanese food in Dubai for 12 years.

The first summer sushi class session had 17 children taking part while the second had 13.

Mr Hansubhayyan said: “Everybody was very happy. All of them at the sushi class made nice food as well.”

Eager culinary pupils at the class were taught to make four different types of sushi.

They made cucumber and salmon hosomaki, which are small sushi rolls made with just one filling, rice, and an external seaweed wrap.

They also made some nigiri, which is a bite-size cube of rice topped with raw fish or seafood, and temaki, which is a larger hand-rolled piece of sushi in the shape of a cone.

Mr Hansubhayyan has plans to run more sushi classes for children in future school holidays, as well as potentially introducing adult classes as well.

He added: “This is my dream to teach the kids and adults as well.

“I’d like to bring my knowledge of Japanese food and sushi to Newbury.”

Sushizen is open from noon to 2.30pm and 5pm to 9.30pm on Tuesdays to Thursdays, noon to 9.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, noon to 9pm on Sundays and the restaurant is closed on Mondays.
