Newbury library to host free event to mark Black History Month
NEWBURY library will host a free event to raise awareness and understanding of Black History later this month.
The event is part of the National Black History Month programme and will feature informative and interactive discussion with speakers including Chair of the Rwandese community in Berkshire, John Binama.
Among the subjects covered on the evening will be Berkshire’s slavery connection and the persecution and plight of people during the Rwandan genocide, while
there will also be an exhibition and a short video.
Community project manager for the West Berkshire minority ethic forum, Waheeda Soomro, said: ”It is a chance to look at how we are all connected with the topic of slavery.
“It will not just be a celebration of black history, we will also be looking at the way in which communities have evolved.”
The event will be held on October 23 from 6pm until 8.30pm and guests will be treated to refreshments, a light buffet meal and entertainment from The Jamaican Society.
