Newbury Library's VIP book club's 10th birthday bash
The library’s VIP (Visually Impaired People) Book Group recently celebrated its 10th birthday with a get together at the Corn Exchange for a celebratory coffee and birthday cake.
The celebration was tinged with sadness as memories of one the group’s founder members Jean Burgess, who died recently aged 91, were shared by her daughter, Jane.
Hilary Cole, West Berkshire's Executive Councillor for Culture & Leisure (Con Chieveley) said: " The VIP Book Group is a great way to share the delights of reading in a very sociable way. That the group is now celebrating its 10th birthday is testament to how enjoyable it is."
" We are proud that Newbury was one of the first libraries in the country to set up a Readers' Group for VIP's. Many other libraries have now followed Newbury's good example and set up their own groups, she added.
The group meets on the 4th Monday of the month at Newbury Library, in the Carnegie Lounge from 10.30am to 11.30am. Members are driven to the library, where they discuss their thoughts and opinions on the month’s chosen book. Members then collect the next month’s audio book and take it home to listen to.
New members are welcome. For more information contact Newbury Library on: (01635) 519900.
