Newbury man involved in fundraiser for Prince Harry's charity

Vodafone employee, Danny Smith, aged 26, who lives in Newbury, is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Sentebale, a charity co-founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho.
Mr Smith hopes to raise £2,000 to aid children suffering with HIV in Lesotho - a landlocked country surrounded by South Africa, and where 40 per cent of the population live below the poverty line.
It will prove the zenith of challenges for Mr Smith, whose charity fundraisers have included a 2009 Three Peaks Challenge in a team of eight, jointly raising £3,000 for an (unnamed) Swindon charity, which provides last wishes to children with terminal illnesses.
Disaster struck the following year (2010), during an attempt at the Welsh 3000’s (14 peaks) and just two weeks prior to a scheduled knee operation:
“Four hours into the 24 hour challenge my knee locked and unfortunately I had to pull out,” said Mr Smith, who, following keyhole surgery on his knee, recovered to complete the Three Peaks Challenge for a second time last year (2013).
With Mount Kilimanjaro in his sights, he has stepped up his training schedule, with kickboxing and running up to 10km per day, climbing the Brecon Beacons at weekends and at Christmas, took part in a winter mountaineering course:
“I decided that the money I raise should go to a charity in Africa, considering I will be trouncing up their largest mountain,” he added.
