Newbury man jailed for supplying drugs in the town

A Newbury man has been jailed in connection with supplying Class A drugs in Newbury.

George Heap, of Avon Way, is facing more than three years behind bars.

The 22-year-old's conviction followed reports of anti-social behaviour in the Nightingales estate in August 2015.

Newbury policeman Sgt Damian Isherwood was patrolling the area when he encountered a large group of men causing distress to residents.

The group ran when police approached but Heap was arrested and evidence was found on his mobile phone linking him to supplying drugs.

Heap was arrested on suspicion of offering to supply controlled drugs on August 26.

A search of his home uncovered a small amount of cannabis and a stash of £1,710, which were seized. He was charged on January 21, 2016.

Heap pleaded guilty of being concerned in supply of a Class A drug - cocaine - at Reading Crown Court on Friday.

He also pleaded guilty to one count possessing cannabis.

He was sentenced to three years' imprisonment for the cocaine charge and one month imprisonment for possessing cannabis, which will run concurrently.

Sgt Isherwood said: "Thames Valley Police is committed in the fight against drugs. We will work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service and all partner agencies to prosecute those who deal drugs. Drug dealers target the vulnerable and spread misery.

"Heap has three years now to reflect upon his actions.
