Newbury man pleads guilty to killing wife

Nigel Talman, of Carnarvon Place, Newbury, pleaded guilty today at Reading Crown Court to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Officers were called to a house in Carnarvon Place at 7.28am on August 17 after receiving a call from Mr Talman that he had killed his wife, 62-year old Sandra.
Her body was discovered in the house, where she was pronounced dead by paramedics. A post mortem showed the cause of death was compression to the neck.
Talman was arrested and then charged on August 18 with his wife’s murder and pleaded guilty to manslaughter today, which was accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Investigating officer Ch Insp Ailsa Kent said: “On the morning of 17 August last year, police received a call from Talman, telling us that he had killed his wife.
“Upon arrival, officers found him at the address, along with the body of Sandra Talman and he was arrested at the scene. In interview, he went on to admit the crime.
“Following consultation with medical professionals, officers and the CPS, we are satisfied with the verdict of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
“This is a desperately sad case and although today’s decision will never bring Sandra back, I hope it will go some way to helping Sandra's family and friends feel that justice has been done.”
Talman will be sentenced on 20 February.
