Newbury man sentenced to 16 years behind bars for attempted murder

Martin Buckland stabbed ex-partner seven times in Inkpen last August

A NEWBURY man has been sentenced to more than 16 years behind bars for the attempted murder of his ex-partner.

Martin Buckland, of Skyllings, pleaded guilty after stabbing his ex-partner a total of seven times in the neck and back at an address in Inkpen last August.

The incident also left the woman with injuries to her hands which continue to require treatment.

Buckland, 49, was sentenced today to 16 years and six months' imprisonment with five years on extended licence for attempted murder.

Investigating officer, Det Con Wayne Harvey from Newbury police station, said: "The guilty plea of Buckland is a fantastic result for the victim, who has suffered enough already from this horrific crime. I would like to thank the victim for her courage throughout the investigation and the trial. She is a genuine inspiration to all officers involved in the case.

“This sentence also reflects the hard work put in to the investigation by the Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit at Newbury, who worked closely with the Crown Prosecution Service to present a case which clearly reflects the gravity of what occurred that day. This case demonstrates the seriousness and impact that domestic abuse can have on the victims.

"I would like other women and men who are suffering from domestic abuse to know that there is help out there and that they can report what they are going through to specialist officers at Thames Valley Police.

“There is help and support available, and wherever possible, we will prosecute."
