Newbury man who spat in police officer's face sentenced to 26 weeks

Twenty-two-year-old also threatened to kill an officer's parents and children

A NEWBURY man who spat in a police officer's face has been sentenced to 26 weeks behind bars.

Dalton Velvick, aged 22, of Gaskell Mews, Newbury, was found guilty of one count of assaulting a constable in the execution of his/her duty at Reading Magistrates' Court yesterday (May 4).

On 27 March 2015, having been arrested by officers on suspicion of drugs offences, Velvick spat in the police officer's face and was subsequently charged a week later.

At the same hearing, Velvick was also convicted of, and sentenced for, three further crimes which will run concurrently.

On March 27, Velvick was found with cannabis in his house and was charged on August 4, while on August 26 Velvick was stopped and found to have cannabis on him for which he was charged the same day.

The final conviction relates to a Section 4 Public Order Act when on January 11 2015, Velvick threatened a police officer, stating he would attack him and kill his parents and children.

Sgt Damian Isherwood from Newbury police station said: "Velvick has 26 weeks in prison to reflect why he acted in the manner he did.

"My officers work incredibly hard and I and the Court will not stand by while they are threatened."
